Basti
The literal meaning of Basti is bladder.
Basti is the most powerful of the five major therapeutic procedures of Panchakarma.
The therapy is the introduction of medicated liquid in the colon through the rectum and also acts directly on the colon as a localized or symptomatic treatment. Rarely, if ever there is need to treat the colon directly, instead it is used for the vital link it has with all other organs and tissues of the body. Basti for this reason has a great influence on the body because it affects all dosha and dhatu.
As for the nourishment of a tree that depends on the roots and through the tree roots absorb water and nutrients moving along the structure, turning them into the trunk, branches, leaves, flowers, fruits, etc.. The root therefore is the primary body that supports the life of the tree, the colon thus has the primary role of providing food and support to all other organs and tissues of the body.
In the West is known as the famous hydrocolontherapy apparatus.
In India it is still considered one of the best methods for purifying the body and is carried out manually in the hospitals of Ayurveda.
