Virechana literally means purgation, it is a treatment that cleans the bowel and associated organs dominated by Pitta (the liver and gallbladder) in the middle of the body. Acting down to remove Ama product from pitta and excess pitta, which is in the form of acid secretion. As we know the pitta has a close relationship with blood, Virechana helps to remove the waste material and toxins from the blood.
Virechana involves the use of purgative herbs and other natural products that causes the movement of the viscera and body which results in a very different effect from diarrhea. Virechana is a controlled process that to collect ama from many parts of the body governed by pitta, draining it in the small intestine and then expelling it, cleanses the function of pitta and thus balances and strengthens all the metabolic processes.
